P5 STEM DAY
P5 had a great few days completing STEM activities.
On Thursday, in their groups, the children took part in the ‘paper bridge challenge’. This involved making the strongest bridge possible using only newspaper and masking tape. The winning bridge held 60 homework diaries before it collapsed!
Next was the ‘spaghetti sculpture’ where the children had 20 minutes to build the tallest possible tower out of spaghetti and marshmallows. The winning height was 45cm.
On Friday, the children completed the ‘cup tower challenge’, where they have 20 paper cups and 12 craft sticks and had to build the tallest tower in 20 minutes. A test of mathematics and balance!
After this, the children completed the ‘foil boat’ challenge and made a foil boat and tested its strength through putting coins inside it until it sank. This required the children to appreciate the need to spread the weight of the coins and design a boat that could float.
Finally, the children made ‘waterproof houses’. This was great fun. They had to design and build a waterproof house using household materials. They tested how waterproof the house was by placing a marshmallow under the house and pouring a water from a watering can above it. Everyone did a brilliant job and had lots of fun.
Great work, P5.
